📝 Immortal Coil Returns!

Launching July 20th

Immortal Coil is a weird series for me. Not only is it a story that didn’t originate in my head, I also came on board halfway through issue 2. So right from the start, it felt as if I was jumping onto a treadmill that was already in motion. But the thing about this universe and its characters is that it’s a world I feel oddly at ease in. Like the Egyptian and Greek pantheon of gods, I took to Norse mythology as a child and often dreamed up reimagined versions of Loki and Odin. And as a young adult, Lovecraft’s work inspired me to draft my own stories of horror and chaos.

So it wasn’t a surprise that I felt at home writing this series and working with Gerald. We hit a groove fairly quickly and the dominoes to complete the first arc fell into place. However, what I didn’t expect was the reception Immortal Coil would receive. I knew the first issue was well liked, but there’s a reason they call the second outing a “sophomoric attempt.” Gerald obviously wowed audiences with his art, but he brought me on board to help with the story, which is what sells subsequent installments. It was up to me to help clear up his vision and move the story along. I just didn’t know that readers would continue to love the later issues just as much as they did the first.

With issues 1 through 3 already completed, Gerald and I will be returning to Kickstarter July 20th to launch issue 4. This will be the penultimate installment before our grand climax, which we plan to go live later this year. Until then, we hope you’ll join us for our next campaign as the horror deepens and the stakes rise higher than ever.

July’s Book Club feature is Radiant Black. This series has drawn a lot of acclaim. I dropped it after the first issue, so I was eager to give it more of a shot. And I gotta say…the first volume kinda stunk. It’s a pretty standard superhero story that is really slow to get going. It does pick up over time though, so I’m going to read everything the library has on it (which is a lot). Usually, I don’t continue a series past volume one, but as a Book Club story I decided to go for it. I’ll let you know if it was worth it by the end.

Child of Light hits an interesting spot between indie game love and classic turn based RPGs. It has a fairy tale-esque story about a girl stuck in a dream world trying to get home. The Final Fantasy lover in me enjoys the party building as she meets characters along the way. And the battle system is a refreshing twist on the standard JRPG style. It won’t blow anyone’s socks off, but game lovers can find a lot to enjoy.

This show is somehow both a love letter to classic horror while also utterly mocking it. It’s hard to pull off this kind of subtle horror comedy, but it works. Widow’s Bay is about a cursed island and the Mayor who tries to save it. Most black comedy doesn’t take itself too seriously. Widow’s Bay does. It’s very suspenseful and great horror at times, but then it breaks that tension in the weirdest of ways. I found the juxtaposition a joy to watch.
